Tune Up

New air filter/spark plug and my old air filter/spark plug!

Last week several of us took our new Young Adult Pastor, Seth Watson, out for lunch at the Flying Weenie. It's a right of passage for all new interns and pastors!

Over the course of our lunch conversation the topic of lawn mowing came up. So I told Seth, "Watch this Seth, I'm going to get Tye really excited. He's going to come right out of his chair!"

People began to guess what I would say next. The set up was complete. So I announced, "I've had my lawn mower for 11 years and I've never sharpened the blade!"

Now you need to know something about Tye Male. He's passionate about his grass and lawn mowing. He double fertilizes his lawn, and mows on Mondays and Thursdays. He double cuts his grass and has immaculately straight lines. He has a spare blade so that he can keep a sharpened one on his mower at all times. His lawn is a thing of beauty, admired by the entire neighborhood!

I'm not sure if Tye was shocked or amused by my shameful admission. Perhaps he felt compassion for a "backslidden" brother. I really don't know. All I do know is that several days later Tye showed up in my garage, removed the dull blade off my mower and took it in to be sharpened.

And today, he returned the blade, bolted it back on my mower, changed the spark plug and installed a new air filter. Neither the spark plug or air filter had been changed in 11 years either!

I can't wait to try out my "new mower!" What started out as a funny story has turned into an act of service. Tye is using an area of his passion to serve me in an area that I just "get by." Thanks Tye for your friendship and servant heart!

Which brings me to the idea of the importance of and need for regular tune ups. Neglect and even abuse of a lawn mower is one thing. Ignoring or failing to maintain things that are valuable to us can have catastrophic consequences.

I've learned a lot about this the hard way. Take these examples.

• My marriage needs regular tune ups. Sharon and I are reading and discussing Love and War, a book on marriage. We've learned over the years that if we aren't intentionally moving toward one another, we are drafting apart. Ask Sharon to tell you the story about her engagement ring some time.
• My physical body needs regular tune ups. I go in for dental check-ups every six months. I just had an appointment this past Monday. I ignored doing this when we were first married which resulted in years of dental work to correct the problems it created. Sharon and I go in for regular chiropractic, physical and eye exams.
• Our finances need regular tune ups. I've balanced our check book monthly for our entire married life. But during the past five years we have worked harder at intentionally managing our finances with a spending plan that we monitor several times a week.
• My spiritual life needs regular tune ups. I set aside 45-60 minutes 4-5 times a week for Bible reading, prayer, and time along with God. Weekly times of corporate worship feed my soul. Our small group and times of prayer help me connect with God and others for healthy spiritual growth.

Regular tune ups are important. Neglect them at your own peril! We care for the things we value.

This week I have enjoyed celebrating the 60th birthday of a friend, coffee with one of my sons, dinner and conversation with a missionary friend, conversation with Sharon about our marriage, breakfast with two friends, and coffee with several other friends.

This week, take time out of your busy schedule to spend with the people and projects that you really care about. Don't let the urgent squeeze out the important. Have that long-needed conversation. Begin that neglected project. Hug a family member. Check in with an old friend. Even mow the lawn! It's time for that long over due tune up!

Going In Style

Today was Administrative Professionals Day so we treated our support staff to a special lunch. They gathered in the lobby at 11:30 to receive their first clue. Their capable chauffeur, Mark Eades, drove our special guests from location to location, where they received additional clues before arriving at their final destination, the Marriott.

They enjoyed a great buffet lunch and time together. I think we accomplished our goal of making the day memorable and meaningful. You can click on the photo above to see a short slideshow.

Can You See It?

This being Clergy Appreciation Month, I want to share some thoughts regarding the great staff team I have the privilege of working with on a regular basis. This morning I was reading 2 Thessalonians 3 and came across these verses:

For you yourselves know how you ought to follow our example. We were not idle when we were with you, nor did we eat anyone's food without paying for it. On the contrary, we worked night and day, laboring and toiling so that we would not be a burden to any of you. We did this, not because we do not have the right to such help, but in order to make ourselves a model for you to follow. vs 7-9

I'm thankful to work with men and women who seek to model what they teach. Who don't expect others to do what they are unwilling to do themselves. Who practice what they preach. "Real deal," servant-leaders who I love to follow because of the strength of their character.

Our staff aren't perfect by any means. But as we come together in unity, to share in our common mission, a beautiful pattern emerges out of our brokenness. As Pastor Bob mentioned last Sunday, "Can you see it?" Can you see the heart of Christ?

Let me tell you what I see.

• In Erin Bird I see faithfulness and thoroughness modeled. With Erin, every small detail and every person is attended to with care and thought.
• In Mark Eades I see a tender heart for God and middle school students modeled. With Mark, every student is important and every contribution appreciated.
• In Mark Forstrom I see creativity and humility modeled. With Mark, every generation and every student needs to discover a relationship with God in new and fresh ways.
• In Gary Hoobler I see a heart of worship modeled. With Gary, worship impacts the way he lives his life 24/7.
• In Tye Male I see a passion for God and people modeled. With Tye, life is an adventure to be experienced, not just talked about.
• In Colette Rieck I see a tender heart for children and the "least of these" modeled. With Colette, children are a treasured gift to be loved and valued.
• In Pat Rieck I see a love for adventure, action and big challenges modeled. With Pat, women are constantly challenged to push beyond their comfort zones as they ask the question, "So what?"
• In Mick Schultz I see the unrestrained joy and enthusiasm of a child modeled. With Mick, families are the place where faith in Christ is best explained and lived out.
• In James Wartian I see a passion for helping people understand the Word of God and a Christian worldview modeled. With James, everyone has a place in the mission, regardless of their age or occupation.
• In Bob Westfall I see the heart of a disciplemaking pastor who leads with authenticity and integrity modeled. With Bob, what you see is what you get, Flying Wienie and all!
• In Thomas Burris I see a young man who desires to see God use his life to make a difference for the kingdom. With Thomas, God's Word is valued and students are loved.

Can you see it? I think I see a pattern emerging. One that reflects the heart of God.

If you see it too, take time this week to jot our staff a note of appreciation. You will be blessed, the cause of Christ will be advanced and our staff will be encouraged!

Job Well Done

Today being Administrative Professionals Day, we treated our support staff to a progressive lunch. Tye Male chauffeured the team to Pat Rieck's home where they enjoyed a gourmet spinach salad and chicken tortilla soup. They then went to Colette Rieck's for the main course. John and Tracie Maurice pinch hit for Colette and served roast pork loin with rhubarb sauce, cheese potatoes, french cut green beans with almonds, cantaloupe slice with grapes, and a carmel sticky bun. They finished their meal off with dessert at Bob and Leesa Westfall's. Bob served an assortment of bite-sized cheese cakes, cream puffs, and chocolate fondue served with bananas and strawberries.

Mark Eades, Mark Forstrom, James Wartian and Mick Schultz helped man the office and answered phones. When the staff got back to the office we had a vase of flowers, a gift bag and card waiting for each of them! Our support staff serves our church family through out the year and we wanted to let them know how much we appreciate them.

So, JoDee, Gina, Peggy, Kris, Angie, Mary, Terri, Donna, Debbie, Sharon, Brenda, Judy, Gina, Sara and Vicky - thank you for using your gifts and talents to serve God's purposes through New Covenant. We couldn't do it without you! You can see a short slide show by clicking on the picture above.

24 Hours

We had an equipping staff and spouse retreat this past Friday and Saturday. We set time aside in our schedule twice a year in order to get away and to reconnect. This is a tradition that we started many years ago and have continued on as we have added more staff.

We begin our time by going out to eat on Friday evening. We tried Kaji Japanese Grill and had a great time. You can click on the picture above to see a slide show of our evening. We then go to Camp Io-Dis-E-Ca for an overnight. Late night conversations, snacks and games usually keep us up well past our bed time. We enjoy sleeping in on Saturday morning, breakfast together and then a time of worship and prayer. We hang out until lunch and then enjoy some more leisurely conversation before we have to clean up and head for home.

I can't begin to explain how important these times together are and how much I enjoy them. And I can't believe how fast they roll around. If we didn't schedule them six months in advance they'd never happen. Our schedules would fill up and we would be unable to find a time to get together. It's called, putting the big rocks in first!

So there you have it, a formula for a great retreat - a little food, good conversation, snacks, games, worship and prayer. It's a great way to spend 24 hours!

The Staff Who Plays Together, Prays Together

It's a dangerous thing to be gone for several days. Bob and I attended the Focus of the Church conference sponsored by the Center for Christian Leadership at Dallas Theological Seminary on Monday and Tuesday of this week. It was a great conference and I'm really thankful that I was able to attend.

We asked Mark Forstrom to lead the Tuesday staff meeting in our absence. Mark always makes life interesting and he once again lived up to his reputation! Mark asked each staff member to wear a "crazy hat" to staff meeting. You can click on the picture above to see a slide show featuring the wacky hats. Thank you to Gina Green for taking the photos so that Bob and I could see what goes on in our absence!

However it wasn't all fun and games. Mark had each staff member write out prayer requests on a mailing label and then place it on their back. People then moved throughout the room, pausing to pray silently for one another. It was a very creative and powerful prayer time! Mark once again proved that the"staff who plays together, prays together!"

Hot

Several of us went over to Buffalo Wild Wings tonight to watch Mark Forstrom take the BWW Challenge to eat 12 wings with their famous Blazin hot sauce in six minutes. You need to understand that Mark loves hot sauce, jalapeno peppers and anything spicy. But we all wanted to see him tackle the Blazin sauce which is made with cayenne red pepper, habanero chiles and jalapeno peppers!

Mark didn't let us down. He woofed down all 12 wings in 5:29! Quite an accomplishment. You can click on the picture above to see a slide show of the experience.

One thing I love about Mark is that he is always trying something new. Mark lives life with gusto! I'm reminded of Revelation 3:15-16:

I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm-neither hot nor cold-I am about to spit you out of my mouth.

Mark reminds me that life is meant to be lived one day at a time. He is a person who refuses to live a "lukewarm" life. And tonight, in more ways than one, Mark was hot!

Thank You

JoDee Martin and Mary Lee Butler prepared a special Appreciation Lunch today for our staff. They pulled out all the stops with cauliflower salad, party potatoes, creamed corn, sweet potato casserole, cherry pineapple jello, beef brisket, chicken with dried beef, and angel food cake.

With a spread of food like that, we all felt mighty appreciated! Thank you JoDee and Mary Lee for your labor of love. You can click on the picture above to see a slide show of the lunch.

Today was the official "goodbye" to DeaJo, our Youth Administrative Assistant. DeaJo has had to resign as she and Brad have moved to Oskaloosa. We gave her a card and a Best Buy certificate as a token of our appreciation. Thank you DeaJo for the many ways you have served our staff team, our youth ministry and our entire church family over the past three plus years. We will miss you.

The Free Prize Inside

This being Equipping Staff Appreciation Month, it's appropriate for me to say "Thanks!" to the people I enjoy working and serving with on a regular basis.

Seth Godin talks about the Free Prize Inside as the secondary benefit of a product or service that makes it remarkable. You probably remember the free prize inserted into every box of Cracker Jack. It wasn't the reason I bought the product, but it was the thing I looked forward to the most - finding out what free prize was at the bottom of my box of Cracker Jack. As a matter of fact, I think I still have the collection of small prizes stashed away somewhere in our storeroom in the basement!

So what's this have to do with our Equipping Staff Appreciation? Each of our staff have a "free prize," a unique, and remarkable characteristic that is an added secondary bonus. • Mark Forstrom - Mark surprises me with a new "prize" on a regular basis. Thanks Mark for your creativity and your willingness to live a "one of a kind" life!


• Gary Hoobler - Gary loves to collaborate and work with the rest of our staff to accomplish our mission and vision. Thanks Gary for being so "fun" to work with!


• Tye Male - I love to watch and listen to Tye play his sax. Thanks Tye for sharing your gift and passion with the rest of our church!


• Colette Rieck - Colette handles every challenge and opportunity that comes her way with grace and joy. Thanks Colette for your ever-present smile and optimistic attitude.

• Mick Schultz - Mick is our staff "Jokester," always ready for some fun. Thanks Mick for that small "twinkle" in your eye, helping me to remember that laughter is good medicine for my soul!


• James Wartian - James is "Mr. Email," getting things in writing in order to clarify our communication. Thanks James for the way you help keep things moving forward!


• Bob Westall - Bob is the person we turn to when it comes to food recommendations. Thanks Bob for making meals memorable and for you and Leesa so graciously opening your home for staff events!


• John Shadle - John is our youth intern from Huntington University. John has done a great job of coming alongside Mark, Mark and our teens as a humble servant. Thanks John for investing into the lives of Josh and Jon!

What a great team! There's much more I could say, but this gives you a small snapshot of why I so enjoy serving at New Covenant. My life is enriched through my involvement with each of our equipping staff. How wonderful it is to serve together with people you respect and care for. 5th Tuesday

We had a fun "5th Tuesday Staff Picnic" this week complete with grilled hamburgers and a potluck lunch. And of course no Staff Picnic would be complete without a rousing game of Baggo and croquet! You can click on the picture above to see a short slideshow of our time.

Baggo may look like fun and games, but it's really quite competitive. As a matter of fact, if you stop by the office early enough in the morning you will see some of the support staff practicing their game!

It's great to hang out and serve with such a great group of people. And our staff team continues to change with JoDee Martin leaving to take a teaching position. This month we welcomed Kris Paulson aboard as Communications Director and Judy Greeb as Children's Ministry Administrative Assistant.

We all enjoy our work, but it's times like Tuesday that help us connect as family.

Small Group Conference

A group of us just returned from an Advanced Small Group Conference at Willow Creek. There were over 90 people in attendance from churches all over the country who gathered to learn more about how to develop and implement a comprehensive small group strategy. The conference was more like a workshop, with short presentations by Bill Donahue, Russ Robinson and Greg Bowman followed by "team time" around our table for discussion and implementation. Each table had a facilitator and ours was Bill Search from Ada Bible Church.

We came home with four newspaper pad pages full of issues that we need to address in order to make our small group ministry more effective. It was so timely that we were able to attend this conference, especially after Bob Gilliam's recommendations.

I'm excited about the things we talked about over the past several days and how we can structure our small groups to be even more effective in helping us become a family of growing disciples! I'm thankful for our Small Group Team (Dave Sanders, Susan Krucher, Erin Bird, James Wartian, Pat Rieck, Tye Male-our Team Leader and myself) that has been meeting this past year and their commitment to make our small group system even stronger.

It's our desire that every person at New Covenant be connected to a caring community of believers. A community where no one walks alone, and where we can be open with one another. A community where lives are miraculously transformed and hearts restored. A place where we become family.

Today officially being Administrative Professionals Day, we sent our support staff out for lunch. As they were waiting in the parking lot for their ride to a secret destination, someone pulled up with two tables strapped to a trailer. We told them, that since the weather was so nice, we decided that it would be fun for them to eat outside. I don't think they bought it!

A few minutes later Phil and Linda Conn pulled up in the New Covenant coach bus to take them to Debbie Berberich's Stone Barn for lunch. I'm sure that Debbie served them in style. You can click on the picture above to see a short slideshow of the trip.

Our support staff do a fantastic job, serving quietly behind the scenes. Today our entire New Covenant equipping staff says "thank you" to Angie, Brenda, Dea Jo, Donna, Gina, JoDee, Mary, Peggy, Sara, Sharon, Terri and Vicky. Your encouragement, help and assistance is appreciated. We are blessed!

Happy 50th!

Happy Birthday Bob

Pastor Bob turns 50 this week. Leesa surprised him with a slideshow set to the music "You're A Good Man Charlie Brown" and then a birthday cake during lunch at Lindale Mall. It was all Bob could do to blow out all 50 candles! You can see a short slideshow by clicking on the above picture.

Birthdays are reminders that time doesn't stand still. Our lives are gifts from God, full of promise and potential. What God gives us is an expression of His grace. What we do with it is an expression of our thankfulness.

Happy 50th. You're a good man, Bob Westfall.

Good Eggs

This being Pastor Appreciation Month, I thought it would be a good idea to recognize the fabulous team of people I have the privilege of working with. Pastor Ray had an endearing way of affirming people. When he wanted to pay me a compliment he would say, "Pagel, you're a good egg." So in honor of Pastor Appreciation Month, I want to hand out some "Good Egg" awards to some of the "coolest" people I know!

• Erin Bird - Erin has brought life of our church through his ministry to our young adults. He is creative, adaptable and innovative. What more can I say, Erin was born to be a flock pastor!
• Mark Eades - Mark loves his job so much he practically lives at church. Actually he lives just two houses away! He is faithful, sincere and enthusiastic. Mark is as cool as a hot tub in January without a heater!
• Mark Forstrom - Mark loves our teens and models the Christian life in an authentic way for them. He is real, creative and out of the box. Mark invented "just in time" ministry!
• Gary Hoobler - Gary brings our church family into the presence of God each Sunday, directing the talents of over one hundred musicians and vocalists. He is a team player, loyal and a great friend to many. Gary has been known to occasionally sneak over to the Nelson Meat Market when he gets a "hanker'n for some meat!"
• Tye Male - Tye has stepped into our team and contributed right away overseeing the Impact Groups this fall. He is enthusiastic, honest and an eager learner. Tye is the new kid on the block, and the only staff person that is allowed to "blow his own horn!"
• Colette Rieck - Colette has a heart for pre-school children, shepherding them with tender care. She is caring, full of grace and joyful. The only children Colette loves more than her New Covenant flock is her own grand daughters!
• Pat Rieck - Pat has endless energy and boundless enthusiasm, with a passion for helping women grow in their relationship with God and one another. She is fun, spontaneous and enthusiastic. Pat takes a back seat to no one until her older brother Ken, walks into the room!
• Mick Schultz – Mick is a kid magnet, leading children to the feet of Jesus. He is positive, flexible and fun to be around. Mick will give you the shirt off his back, and he will even throw in two or three more if he has them in your size!
• James Wartian – James has the distinction of leading two areas of ministry – Mature Adults and Missions. He just completed his first year and has done an outstanding job; helping to establish the Project CR Partnership and launching a new mature adult ABF. James is glad that Tye has arrived so that he has someone to pick on!
• Bob Westfall – Bob has a passion for communicating the Scriptures with clarity for life application. He is real, humble and balanced. The only things Bob loves more than a Flying Weenie hot dog is Leesa, his girls, Ohio State Buckeyes and the Cleveland Browns!

At New Covenant we value character. We look for people who aren’t interested in talking about themselves and don’t care who gets the credit. Our team is the “real deal.” Our pastors and directors are not only competent in their area of ministry, but they are also devoted to the Lord and their family and friends. Creating Space For Life

Oscillation

I'm enjoying the book, The Power of Full Engagement by Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz. The premise of the book is that managing energy, not time, is the key to high performance and personal renewal. Full engagement requires cultivating a dynamic balance between the expenditure of energy and the renewal of energy physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.

The authors call this oscillation, and it represents the fundamental pulse of life. Nature itself has a pulse, a rhythmic movement between activity and rest. The ebb and flow of the ocean tides, the change of seasons, and the daily rising and setting of the sun create the rhythms of life. So too, human beings are guided by rhythms. Our breathing, brain waves, body temperature, heart rates, hormone levels and blood pressure all have rhythmic patterns.

Our 24/7, always on, western society has pushed us to perform at unsustainable levels without adequate rest or recovery. Our propensity to live "linear" lives ignores our need for recovery and leads to unproductive levels of stress. "Sounds become music in the spaces between notes, just as words are created by the spaces between the letters. It is in the spaces between work that love, friendship, depth and dimension are nurtured. Without time for recovery, our lives become a blur of doing, unbalanced by much opportunity for being."

I'm learning to build in more frequent times of recovery during my day. It's not easy, but I'm learning to be more in tune with my rhythms. Taking time to talk to family and friends, listen to music, eat lunch or a healthy snack, reflect, pray, create, blog or read help recharge my physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual energy reserves.

Our equipping staff and families enjoyed a great time of relaxation and refreshment tonight at the Eade's home. It was so relaxing to sit with friends I love and to enjoy the beautiful evening! Click on the picture at the top of this blog article to see a short slideshow of our evening.

Living a healthy, productive and fully engaged life requires careful attention to how I expend and recover energy. I want the second half of my life to be more successful than the first half. I want to create space for life!

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul. Psalm 23:1-3a

Welcome to Our Community

Moving Crew

Tye, Andrew, Allyson and Morgan arrived today with their two moving vans. Judy and Mackenzie will drive out and join the rest of the family on Wednesday. The Male's were greeted by an energetic moving crew of teens and adults. We ripped into the two vans and had them unloaded in less than one hour. The piano took another 30 minutes to negotiate. I knew there was a reason that I don't play the piano!

It was awesome to see the body of Christ in action today - helping, carrying, unpacking, setting up beds, cooking, and loving. Tye, Judy and family; welcome to our community of faith!

Taking Jesus To The Streets

Car Wash

Our equipping staff tried something new this week. On Tuesday, we wrapped up our staff meeting an hour early in order to visit our business neighbors in the immediate area. We went out in five teams and in invited 73 businesses and their employees to stop by today from 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM for a free car wash and food.

The turn out wasn't what we hoped for, so we honed our washing skills on over 20 staff and volunteers cars! Several teens and some of our support staff also helped us with the car wash and food. Regardless of the results, it was good for us to get into the neighborhood and to meet our neighbors. We don't want to keep Jesus locked up behind four walls, accessible only to those who enter our doors. We want to take Jesus into our community. We want to take Jesus to the streets.

We Can Only Imagine

We love Tye!

Today we created space for one more staff person with the arrival of Tye Male as our Middle Adult Pastor. Welcome aboard Tye! To celebrate the special occasion we all wore an ugly tie to our Tuesday afternoon staff meeting. Not to be outdone, Tye arrived to the meeting wearing a special tie of his own.

Today marks the completion of part of the vision that was cast in 2001. After our church survey and consultation in 2000, we decided to move to a flock model of ministry in order to be a more intentional disciplemaking church. We embarked on a simultaneous search process for a Children’s Pastor, Junior High Pastor, Young Adult Pastor, Middle Adult Pastor and Women’s Director. In addition, we envisioned an Executive Pastor working closely with the Senior Pastor and a Mature Adult/Missions Pastor. Over the past four years God has provided Mick, Mark, Erin, Bob, Pat, James and now Tye! And we are equally blessed with the additional support staff who have been added to help meet the needs of our growing church family.

Who could have imagined four years ago what God would do? As we look over the horizon to future relocation and growth, we can’t begin to imagine all that God has prepared for us. Over the course of the next five years what new ministries will be launched? What new staff will be hired? What new followers of Christ will be added to the family? What new missionaries will be commissioned from our church body? Whose life will be transformed by the power of Jesus Christ? We can only imagine!
